The very first time I came to the Philippines I flew into Mactan and stayed in Cebu City. I suppose since Cebu was my first taste of the Philippines, this is where my heart has grown fondest. I loved how you could enjoy the city life of Cebu City, but be at a beautiful beach resort in Mactan in 30 minutes. I love how you can take a bus ride and go to a more exclusive white sand beach resort in Moalboal or easily travel to the northern most tip of Cebu and relax on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world on Bantayan Island. Today, I will feature the inexpensive “budget” beach resorts on Cebu. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the luxury of white sand beaches, resorts with swimming pools, fitness centers, etc… You just have to know where to look! 🙂 Here are some of my favorite Cebu Island beach resorts for the budget traveler who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money.
Moalboal Beach Resorts
Moalboal was the first beach resort that I visited when I spent nearly 3 months in Cebu. Filipinos kept telling me that Moalboal was really nice and was less crowded that touristy places like Boracay Beach. I love Moalboal because it is only 2 – 3 hours away from the Mactan airport (depending on traffic). It is well known for diving and snorkelers. They often dive near a reef that inhabits a wide variety of marine life near Pescador Island. You can get to Pescador Island very easily from Moalboal. It’s only a couple kilometers away. The water is crystal clear and there are many beach resorts to choose from.
Where Is Moalboal Located?
Moalboal is located in the southern tip of Cebu. It’s much less populated than Cebu City and you get an entirely different experience. About 28,000 people live in Moalboal and they were all very friendly during my visit. There are many resorts and restaurants located right on the beach. You may also want to inquire about waterfalls and caves that you can hike to nearby. I paid for a trekking expedition in Moalboal that I will post about in the future. I had a guide and it was a wonderful experience.

Budget Beach Resorts
When I went to Moalboal I wanted to stick to a budget of $30 USD or less for a beach resort. I also wanted to be right on the beach, have an on site restaurant, and have access to diving and snorkeling locations. I chose the Asian Belgian resort and have no regrets about my choice.
There are 9 rooms at the Asian Belgian Resort. They have hot showers and air conditioning, which is a must for me. Most of the rooms have a terrace with seating. The views of the beach / ocean are really good and you get a nice view of the sunset in the evenings.
Kayak Rentals, Diving, and Snorkeling
I rented a kayak while I was there and paddled around. I also went snorkeling which was amazing. The water was crystal clear and I got to witness amazing corals, fish, and sea turtles. I am not a diver so I can’t give a proper review on this aspect, but Moalboal is well known for it’s beachfront resorts and diving spots.
Internet access – Yes, you get free Wi-Fi in all rooms and public areas.
What can you do on the resort?
You can go diving, swimming, kayaking, hiking, relax in a beach chair with your toes in the sand, have a beer, and just let your worries just melt away.
Do they have an on site bar?
Yes, you can can order drinks at the beachfront bar. They also have room service. They have an on site restaurant that I was very happy with. In the Philippines the restaurants seem to be hit or miss, and your always rolling the dice. I have had some bad experiences with beach resort restaurants but the food here was wonderful! Especially at a resort that fits my budget criteria! To me, anything less than $30 a day is considered budget travel and you get a lot for what you pay for.
- They have laundry service that was quite affordable.
- Smoking area..
- Currency exchange
- Cash withdrawal. This was very convenient. I’ve been to many budget resorts where it was hard to get cash. So, two thumbs up on this!
- Luggage storage and safe deposit boxes.
I didn’t have kids with me, but having a babysitting service is really nice for couples who want some adult time to themselves to go hiking, kayaking, diving, etc…
Do they allow pets? – Yes, but I’m not sure on what the exact criteria is for the animals that you are allowed to have. I saw a small dog. Not sure if they have a weight limit for your pet.
Available in all rooms
- Air conditioning
- Hot/cold showers
- Balcony or terrace
The amenities that you receive at the Asian Belgian Resort are top notch for being cheap in price! There are also many other cheap beach resorts you can visit in Moalboal or the surrounding areas like Pescador Island (great for divers). Here you can view all of the Moalboal Beach Resorts and rank them however you want. You can list them from the cheapest, or by which have the best review ratings.
